![]() A very basic overview of the Kabbala starts here.
The Kabbala is a map of consciousness. It is based on an even more ancient and universal map of consciousness called The Tree of Life. And so Kabbala is typically taught with a tree-like diagram with ten sephirot (divine emanations; its singular is sephira). Beyond these lies God as first Ain Soph Aur (Endless Light), then Ain Soph (Endless/Infinite), then Ain (Nothing). ![]() A detailed diagram of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life by Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov.
Each sephira has five aspects to be studied: a name of God; the name of the sephira; a leader of each of the 10 angelic orders; the angelic order; the name of the planet. Purpose of the Kabbala Kabbala gives a structure to all that exists. It is a diagram of God. This includes not only the physical universe with its atoms and galaxies, but all the many non-physical worlds as yet undetected by science. This is not a modern multiverse, Marvel or otherwise. Rather it maps out hidden aspects of a single universe that is so much vaster than the known physical universe. So, beyond Nature there are many invisible worlds. There is Great Spirit with its angels. This is where metaphysics applies, where cosmic law is far more apparent. There is so much to know here that it cannot be reduced to science. This is where esoteric science and mysticism are needed. Consider:-
Kabbala is a ancient, mystical path of Judaism. It is recommended that only those aged 40 or over study it, as it is dangerous. By age 40, hopefully you have developed enough stability and life experience to cope with its extraordinary demands. Otherwise, as a story goes, of four rabbis that studied it, one died, one renounced Judaism, one went mad and only one managed to ground the harmony and peace of its revelations. Kabbala has been adapted for those who are not Jewish. A modern celebrity example is The Kabbalah Centre with followers such as Madonna. ![]() Madonna and her adopted son David with matching tattoos of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life (Madonna Daily, 4 April 2022 tweet) Personal Explorations I am not Jewish. I have very briefly studied authentic Jewish Kabbalah at Ohr Somayach through its audio library. I have very briefly studied Hebrew at Ohr Somayach from an orthodox Jew. I have also studied various non-Jewish versions. My preferred non-Jewish teacher on it is Omraam Mikhaël Aïvanhov. As I am not Jewish and not at all fluent in Hebrew, I am reluctant to study it that deeply. I am also wary of studying complex systems as a way of avoiding:-
So, I do sometimes find it helpful as a way to contemplate God. One area that is of interest is Kabbala's understanding of evil and demons. As Z’ev ben Shimon Halevi observes in Kabbalah (1979, pp.11-12): “Their
task, at both the macrocosmic and microcosmic levels, is to intervene
in order to test goodness and prove it sound. These demonic forces
appear to be evil, but, as is observed in the book of Job, Satan the
tester is one of the Sons of God. It is as cosmic functionaries that
the forces of Chaos seek to disrupt the balance of the universe... and
to feed off what has not been made whole.”
In other words, the purpose of evil is to reveal the glory of God. Man has the free will to do this or not. At present, we find a humanity that is causing extinction and heavily complicit in evil. There is so much work that we have to do to reconnect with the Light! ![]() What Kabbala can teach Humanity I have already touched on the main way that I feel humanity today might benefit greatly from the map of consciousness called Kabbala. The world is not merely the physical universe!
The physical universe is only the lowest sephira in the Tree of Life, Malkuth. Most people think that this is all that exists. However, we are not just neurons, chemicals and stardust. Beyond the sphere where physics and neurochemistry dominate, there are ever subtler realms that return us all the way back to God. God has qualities like Love, Light, omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence. We have a Spirit - our essence - that is one with God. This Spirit can inhabit - or shrink itself into - a 'body' called the soul. This soul is able to travel all these hidden regions. The soul can also wear 'clothes', like a physical body on Earth. The soul can change its clothes through reincarnation. Through reincarnation, the soul enjoys and/or endures many varied experiences. ![]() Resources
