![]() You can build your life around one or all of these aphorisms. They are loosely listed by a few themes, though they often overlap. They have a mystical, loving, practical flavour. Enjoy! Themes
![]() Basics A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. (Lao Tzu) Better be wise by the misfortunes of others than by your own. (Aesop) If it doesn't feel right, don't do it. That's the lesson. That lesson alone, will save you a lot of grief. Even doubt means don't. (Oprah Winfrey) If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. (Maya Angelou) It is only natural to want things to stay as they are, but life is a journey and change is unavoidable. A wise person accepts this and enjoys each precious moment as fully as they can. (Dharmachari Nagaraja, Buddha at Bedtime, p.20) Let your teacher be love itself. (Rumi) Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible. (Francis of Assisi) Use only that which works, and take it from any place you can find it. (Bruce Lee) Violence is rarely the answer, but when it is, it is the only answer. (TFT) Wear gratitude like a cloak, and it will feed every corner of your life. (Rumi) ![]() Life Direction And if every way is closed before you. The secret one will show a secret path no other eyes have seen. (Rumi) Follow your bliss and the universe will open doors where there were only walls. (Joseph Campbell) If the light is in your heart, you will find your way home. (Rumi) Let the beauty of what you love be what you do. (Rumi) Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray. (Rumi) We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us. (Joseph Campbell) When you are in doubt, be still, and wait; when doubt no longer exists for you, then go forward with courage. So long as mists envelop you, be still; be still until the sunlight pours through and dispels the mists – as it surely will. Then act with courage. (Chief White Eagle, Ponca nation [Native American]) Your heart knows the way. Run in that direction. (Rumi) ![]() Coping with Suffering/Chaos Your anchor can be a High Ideal. It will stabilise, protect you from being wrecked. Do not worry that your life is turning upside down. How do you know that the side you are used to is better than the one to come? (Rumi) Don't grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form. (Rumi) Let it go, let it leave, let it happen. Nothing in this world was promised or belonged to you anyway. (Rupi Kaur) When you’re down to nothing, remember that you really do have the power to make something out of nothing. (Don Ward) You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, “I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.” (Eleanor Roosevelt) Being grateful all the time isn’t easy. But it’s when you feel least thankful that you are most in need of what gratitude can give you: perspective. Gratitude can transform any situation. It alters your vibration, moving you from negative energy to positive. It’s the quickest, easiest, most powerful way to effect change in your life — this I know for sure. (Oprah Winfrey, What I Know for Sure) This too shall pass. (Persian Sufi adage) [Commentary: Use it as an affirmation] ![]() Mental/Emotional Health Feel it, don't flee it. (Heather Dominick-Kosmicki paraphrase) In many shamanic societies, if you came to a medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions. "When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop finding comfort in the sweet territory of silence?" Where we stopped dancing, singing, being enchanted by stories, or finding comfort in silence is where we have experienced the loss of soul. Dancing, singing, storytelling, and silence are the four universal healing salves. (Gabrielle Roth) [Commentary: Dance daily. Sing your power songs. Listen to stories. Be quiet.] It is not happiness that makes us grateful. It is gratefulness that makes us happy. (Brother David Steindl-Rast) I have three treasures that I guard and cherish: the first is love, the second is contentment, the third is humility. Only the loving are courageous, Only the contented are magnanimous, Only the humble are capable of command. (Lao Tzu) Life is a balance of holding on and letting go. (Rumi) Let everything happen to you. Beauty and terror. Just keep going. No feeling is final. (Rainer Maria Rilke) What if each time you experienced an emotion you acknowledge it, accepted it, and became curious about its message for you? Imagine how this could change your life. Imagine how heard, loved and honoured you would feel if you really listened to yourself. (Vironika Tugaleva) ![]() Physical Health Be your own healer with simple lifestyle changes: sleep, diet, quiet, breathwork, nature. ![]() Relationships PWP's favourite teaching on relationships is AMP. In my view, it applies to all relationships, not just male-to-female or romantic ones. The three key practices are:- 1 - Presence = be here-now. Relax. Enjoy the moment. Turn up fully. Buddha-style. 2 - Appreciation = being a "yes" to whatever the other brings. Jesus was big on this. 3 - Integrity = acting from your principles, owning your truth. By applying these daily in life, you walk the razor's edge between collapsing (e.g. getting defensive) and posturing (e.g. acting like you don't care). Other key practices:- - Authenticity. This can involve vulnerability, a going from "nice" to "honest". - Connection. Far more important than attraction. Being open to the other without losing oneself. - Curiosity, When genuine, it creates trust and openness. It can be about following dissonance. You get their world. To understand all this, it's worth buying their Foundations of Inner Game. I use it daily. ![]() AMP Male-Female Holarchy diagram
When man does the left, starting with Presence, it evokes the corresponding on the right in woman (Screenshot from ‘Foundations of Authentic Attraction’ video by Garrison Cohen) Spiritual Practice Close your eyes, fall in love, stay there. (Rumi) Knock, and he’ll open the door. Vanish, and he’ll make you shine like the sun. Fall, and he’ll raise you to the heavens. Become nothing, and he’ll turn you into everything. (Rumi) Let your teacher be love itself. (Rumi) If the only prayer you ever say in your whole life is "thank you," that would suffice. (Meister Eckhart) Every step I take is a blessing. (Rumi) Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich. If you stay in the centre and embrace death with your whole heart, you will endure forever. (Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching) Things to do today: exhale, inhale, exhale...ahhh. (Buddha) ![]() Spiritual Understanding Both good and evil exist. And because evil exists, it means it has a role to play in the great cosmic body of the universe. As humans, we don’t know why it exists. We can only observe that a higher intelligence makes use of evil by incorporating it into its plans and so helping beings to evolve. From a philosophical and metaphysical point of view, the issues raised by duality are resolved through unity, which is the very essence of God. But when it comes to morality, we must tread cautiously on the path of unity, so as not to confuse things the way some so-called spiritual people do. Since they have read or heard that there is no such thing as good or bad, pure or impure, beauty or ugliness, they launch into dangerous, wild imaginings and claim to be acting in all innocence, when they are actually committing crimes. From a moral point of view, evil exists. (O.M. Aïvanhov) Doubt everything. Find your own light. (Buddha) The Way is beyond words. (Sengcan, the Third Chinese Patriarch of Zen, in Xinxin Ming) ...instead of always asking for more knowledge, ask for light, for light is weightless. Light is of a higher order than knowledge, and it brings you knowledge as well. (O.M. Aïvanhov) We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience. (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin) [Commentary: A brilliant map of consciousness which integrates this truth is Animal, Human & Angel. It may be even better than the Higher/Lower Self map of consciousness, as the valuable parts of the Lower Self are accepted and put to good use.] Who says the eternal being does not exist? Who says the sun has gone out? Someone who climbs up on the roof, and closes his eyes tight, and says, I don’t see anything. (Rumi) ![]() Sun/Solar Culture And still, after all this time, the Sun has never said to the Earth, "You owe me." Look what happens with love like that. It lights up the sky. (Rumi) Only the sun will teach you to live the divine life. (O.M. Aïvanhov) ![]() Understanding Love If you knew the secret of life, you too would choose no other companion but love. (Rumi) I love myself, I love you. I love you, I love myself. (Rumi) Love is the bridge between you and everything. (Rumi) You have to keep breaking your heart until it opens... (Rumi) Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it. (Rumi) ![]() Death After you die, all the thoughts you had will throng around you like children. (Rumi) [Commentary: So, how think you? What thoughts do you project into the psychosphere? Choose your future wisely...] When you were born, you cried, and the world rejoiced. Live your life in such a way that when you die, the world cries, and you rejoice. (Native American proverb) ![]() |
