They fuse with the graft determining the type of fruit. So a slow-growing sweet variety of date palm may be grafted onto a date palm that has vigorous growth but sour fruit. This produces a plant that will produce many sweet dates. Spiritual grafting is similar, except that you are grafting virtues onto lesser passions. So a person that is easily addicted can harness this strong tendency and graft on something like altruism. They become powerfully addicted to doing good rather than self-harming. So, if I understand this solar culture exercise correctly, you are asking the sun to send a grafting of virtue from the sun itself onto your vigorous yet sour self! And you must be alert to help this happen. Grafting as a spiritual technique can be contrasted with a Replacement type strategy, where one habit is completely dropped and another adopted. Maybe a plant analogy of this is switching from growing dates to growing olives. A human example of this might be losing an addictive temperament and becoming a peaceful personality - addictive tendencies are not evident any more.
