Drumming

Sunrise, sunset, solstice, equinox, celebrating the ancestors, and keeping a watch on the night - these are all times of celebration. As we relax in our lives and enjoy what is coming, our fears drop away since we have no more need of carrying them. We must make time to mark time...

The sun is rising through Stonehenge

Each day is special. We mark the dawn with the sun coming up, especially on solstice and equinox, and find a special place to do so. Go someplace special, where you can relax and be yourself, and where you will not create a disturbance. Go to a hill or wood, near a waterfall, or in a glen. This is a sacred wakan opportunity to mark time. When we drum at these major turning points, at dawn and sunset, we know that over the surface of the planet there are others joining us...

A woman with blonde hair and white jumper is drumming. She is moving. It seems just before sunrise. Her drum has a Goddess image at its centre.

Go to your special place some time before you wish to begin the ceremony. Set up a sacred space with a central altar and place stones or flags in each quarter [a coloured stone or flag for each direction and two stones between each compass point in a circle around the altar]. As the sky becomes light, stand in a circle. Begin sounding and cleansing the chakras by chanting sacred sounds, such as om, into the earth and then into your base chakra, which is red. Move up through the body, going through each chakra and raising the sound as you progress upward. Stay together in sound. When everyone has finished, call in through prayer all the guardians and angels. Visualize the crystal fire of the Earth Mother pouring up through the circle into everyone’s hearts, and then call down the clear golden light of Grandfather Sky. As the sun rises, feel the two lights merge in the heart area, and visualize a pink rose in the center of the group. Send the power of the new dawn, mixed with your combined love, down the line of the rising light, toward other celebrators. Drum as you go, but while people pray aloud, let the drums be gentle, so that their prayers can be felt and heard. Gradually build up the drum sound, sending the prayers out to Spirit and into the world.
