The High Ideal

The High Ideal is a fundamental part of the
Teaching of Omraam Mikhaёl Aïvanhov.

"Would you like to cure yourself of certain weaknesses and be able to control certain instinctual tendencies? You will only succeed if you nurture within you the love for a high ideal. And what is a high ideal? It is a longing for beauty, spiritual beauty, which consists of purity, light and harmony. You contemplate this beauty, and naturally, spontaneously, you become detached from everything that is unhealthy, dark and chaotic. This love of beauty protects you, like a garment you would not want to get dirty. When you wear new clothes or ones you particularly like, you do not launch into activities in which you are likely to tear or stain them. You instinctively pay attention to your movements and to where you sit. It is the same with the high ideal. If you decide to cultivate a taste for the world of beauty and harmony and the wish to draw closer to it, you will gradually feel a kind of subtle garment being woven around you that you will want to protect, and you too will be protected." "Those who are truly directed by a high ideal never become discouraged. The mere presence of this high ideal within them, guiding and feeding them, gives them strength and hope. They will influence you, they will transform you as they work to attract the necessary elements from the universe and to establish them in your entire being. Of course, a good deal of time and work are necessary before any result is achieved. But the day this result presents itself, you can doubt no longer: you feel a living entity above you which protects you, instructs you, purifies you, enlightens you, and in difficult situations gives you the support you need. So you should begin by forming some ideal in the world of the spirit. Then, thanks to the thought this perfection will then gradually descend into your psychic matter where it will be realized." "Why is it important to hold beauty, light, purity, power, and love as your high ideal? Because this ideal has magical effects: an entire network of energies is woven between you and this ideal. A high ideal activates forces hidden deep within our being; it awakens them and attracts them to itself.
A high ideal serves first as a means of comparison, a yardstick, a model, a sample. But above all it activates the forces of our consciousness and superconsciousness. Then, little by little, our mind is enlightened and discovers the path that will lead us to perfection; our heart expands and is filled with love; our will is stimulated and energized. Thus a high ideal brings our whole being into harmony with God himself. For every thought, every feeling, every desire, and every action, we should ask ourselves, ‘Does it bring us closer to our ideal? Or does it distance us from it?'" (O.M. Aïvanhov)

"The highest ideal is to model oneself on the sun: its life, warmth and light. If your model is a scholar, a writer, a philosopher, or even a hero or a saint, you will no doubt be influenced by their qualities and virtues, but there will always be something missing. Even if you take the greatest masters of humanity as your model, you will still not have an image of true perfection.
The image of perfection is the sun; and if, in the desire to give light, warmth and life to creatures, you take the sun as your model, you yourself will be transformed. For even if you never obtain the sun’s light, warmth and life, the very desire to acquire them will propel you to the celestial regions where you will truly accomplish marvels. Your desire to give light, warmth and life will make you more luminous, warmer and more alive."
