Keywords

Death & Rebirth. Death of Old → New Life. Great Change. Endings & Beginnings. Turning Point. Overcoming Conditioning.

Themes

This is usually the death of the old self, the old lifestyle - not physical death or suicide.

Death warns of the emptiness of worldly things - power, riches, beauty, strength.
All yield to Death. Death makes all things equal.

Death as a skeleton shows us the bare bones, the essential elements of life.
The skeleton is sexless, impersonal, beyond so many usual identities.
Bones are rarely seen in live beings, so they symbolise unseen parts of the psyche, which are only contacted by prayer, meditation, visions, dreams.

Fear of death may need to be confronted and accepted. Sometimes this may involve out-of-body experiences and near-death experiences.
We value both human life and also spiritual life. We learn to live each day to the full. There is less clinging and grasping. Although physical death may come at any time, knowledge of our spiritual essence is comforting.

Comparisons

Death is an aspect of the Life of The Wheel of Fortune.

The acceptance of divine law and surrender to death in The Hanged Man (XII) is further advanced. The old is dying and the new is appearing. The new human eventually emerges in Judgement (XX). Daily you die to the lower nature and identify ever stronger with Light and Love...

Notes & Quotes

Death was often unnamed, superstitiously, because when we do call someone's name, he usually turns and looks in our direction. And it was always "unlucky" 13.

"All things change: nothing perishes." (Ovid)

"Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee." {John Donne adaptation)

"By saying, "Except ye die ye shall not live," Jesus meant that if you die to your selfish desires and appetites, you will live in the Spirit, in splendour." (O.M. Aïvanhov)

"Earth knows no desolation. She smells regeneration in the moist breath of decay." (George Meredith)

"I am the gateway to life." (Dolores Ashcroft-Nowicki)

"There is no death, only a change of worlds." (Chief Seattle)

"There is no death; there is the Force." (The Jedi Code excerpt)
